As with most graphic novels, manga-style "Afterschool Charisma" has a fast-moving story line. The artwork is crisp and clear (in b&w) and moves the narrative along in support of the dialogue. Author Kumiko Suekane creates an interesting scenario, with an interplay of young people who are clones of history's greats, and others who are natural-born children of today's greats (as for instance, doctors, researchers). Be that as it may, each young character shows himself or herself to be an individual who looks for happiness by achieving her or his own potential, and even by being supportive of others. It is not something to be taken for granted, however, as some clones wonder if they are condemned to repeat of lives and feats of their originals.

The central character of this volume one of what may become a long saga is Shiro Kamiya. He is the son of a doctor, and not a clone at all. How he lives and relates with the others is half the story. He is their fellow student at St. Kleio Academy. Shiro's real function seems to be to raise questions, not among his classmates, perhaps, but among his readers. Are we determined by our heredity? by our history? by our environment? by those who pressure us, seen or unseen? Are our lives set in stone because of circumstances beyond our control? does history repeat itself, or can we learn from history and not repeat the mistakes of the past? Or does each person, no matter how young, have the ability to make the world a better place, starting in the here and now? The search for meaning: is this possible for each person? can wrongs be righted? can friendship and solidarity equip even the vulnerable to change the environment for the better?

The book ends without answering any of these questions, but the reader can keep mulling these over and perhaps begin to formulate a response for her or his own life.

After binge reading the first three volumes, I have to say that overall the series feels very unimpressive. A long-wind up to the actual plot, vapid characters, a level of implausibility that is surprising even for manga, and over-the-top silly melodrama make for a rather uninspiring read.

Story Shiro is the only non-clone (son of a professor) at a private school that raises clones of famous historical figures. What is their purpose? Will they follow the same paths as their predecessors? Why is Shiro at the school if he isn't a clone? Who is the mysterious school benefactor? Many questions are raised when the clone of John F. Kennedy is assassinated just as his predecessor was in the 1960s.

The point of this first volume is to introduce the famous historical figures. The people chosen to be cloned is baffling - Florence Nightengale?!? Hitler?!? And while the story should be exploring nature vs. nuture, really what we have is a lot of pointless 'average high school kids' drama. I have to wonder if Suekane actually studied any of the historical figures since the clones bear only the shallowest of similarities. Elizabeth the first is arrogant. Rasputin plots. Freud smugly evaluates. Napolean is a happy go lucky leader. Hitler is a quiet damaged looking kid. Joan of Arc is a bit unhinged. You get the idea.

In this first volume, the kids are traumatized and scared that they will share early deaths of their predecessors (especially Joan of Arc). They are all pretty stupid - so honestly, I had a hard time caring if they did actually die young. I was beginning to wonder if someone had lobotomized them in the process of the cloning.

There is supposed to be the mystery behind Shiro to explore as well as the students themselves conspiring against each other. But really, it's mostly the kids running around overreacting to everything while Shiro looks on in confusion through most of the book. The art work is kind of ok.

On the plus side, this has a lovely presentation with flapped front and back covers as well as an oversize edition.
This is an interesting manga is worth the read. The idea of setting a school drama in a school filled with clones of historical figures with only one non clone. The issues raised are entreating like the clones "repeating history" or what makes a person alive?
Had a waay more interesting start than i anticipated. Really good for people who need a manga to surprise you at every turn.
